Men sentenced for football related violence

Fourteen men, guilty of football related violence, have today been given custodial sentences and banned from attending football matches for six years.

The sentences relate to serious disorder in Leicester city centre towards the end of the match between Leicester City and Norwich City on Saturday February 16 2008.

Police were called to the Loseby Lane area of Leicester after reports of objects being thrown and damage being caused to premises due to fighting between two groups of fans, some of whom suffered minor injuries.

A total of 27 men were arrested in connection with the incident. Of those 16 were charged with public order offences and the remaining 11 released without charge. 15 pleaded guilty to public order offences. A sixteenth man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is due to stand trail for in May.

Yesterday (Wednesday April 8), Ben Potter (36) from North Park Avenue in Norwich, Nigel Brian Broom (38) from Orchard Road in Spixworth, Leon Horton (44) from Wilks Farm Drive in Sprowston, Gary Cox (46) from Aldryche Road in Norwich, James Asbery (25) from Kingswood Avenue in Taverham, Andrew Collinson (41) from Olive Road in Norwich, Graham Anstiss (45) from Jean Drive inĀ  Leicester and Damian Anstiss (23) from Ditchling Avenue in Leicester were all sentenced to seven months for Affray.

Adam Ford (21) from St Williams Way in Thorpe St Andrew, Thomas Stamler (20) from Ferrars Court in Huntingdon, and Paul Cossey (21) from Marlingford Way in Easton, due to their age and previous good character, were all given a 7-month suspended sentence for Affray and ordered to serve 100 hours community service.

Michael Davies (39) from Guernsey Road in Norwich, Mark Hipperson (39) from Saxon Meadows in Bawdeswell and Mark Gilbey (44) from Greenacres Drive in Poringland were all sentenced to three months for Section 4 Public Order offences.

Jamie Gilligan (18) from Church Causeway in Church Langton has had his sentencing adjourned until next week and a sixteenth defendant is due to stand trial in May

Two of the guilty men, Damian and Graham Anstiss claimed to be Leicester fans, the remaining claimed to be Norwich fans.

Inspector Rob Widdowson who is overseeing the investigation, said: "We're very pleased with this result and the fact that the judge issued them all with custodial sentences, of which only three were suspended sentences. I hope this sends a very strong message that behaviour like this will not be tolerated in Leicester.

"Do not think that you can use a football fixture as an excuse to commit public disorder because we will use all the powers available to us to identify you and take action against you.

"Not all the offenders were arrested at the scene and we worked closely with our colleagues in Norfolk Constabulary using CCTV evidence and witness testimonies to identify other people involved.

"We'd like to thank everyone who assisted with what was a logistically involved and complicated and involved enquiry.

"All these men have been banned from attending any football match for 6 years. We therefore would like genuine Leicester and Norwich fans to help us police that. If you spot any of these men at a match, please call your local police force or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

Photographs of the offenders arrested by Leicestershire Constabulary are available to the media only on request.
