Elderly woman seriously assaulted in Freemans Meadow

Police are appealing for witnesses after an 80-year-old woman was seriously assaulted on Freemans Meadow.

The incident happened at around 11.30pm on Good Friday (April 10) in the parking area to one of the apartment buildings on the Freemans Meadow Complex.

The woman, who had been to a local store on Western Boulevard, was about to enter the building when she was grabbed from behind, pulled to the floor and punched to the head and body. During the incident the woman also had items of clothing removed and her purse stolen.

The attacker is described as being as being in his twenties or thirties, white, wearing light-blue jeans a dark thigh-length jacket over a light-coloured hooded top. He may have left the scene on a push bike.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen a man on a bike or recognises anyone who matches the description.

Detective Sergeant Glen Iceton, said: "Incidences of this kind, on elderly women, are fortunately extremely rare but this crime is very concerning, particularly the way the offender has removed items of clothing from the victim.

"She herself has been brave and is keen to help us in any way she can to bring this man to justice.

"We're keen to speak to anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area particularly this youth on the bike. Do you know him? Did you see him?

"Was it you? Perhaps you had nothing to do with this assault but were in the area and remember key details.

"It happened close to midnight on Good Friday. Lots of people may have been in the area celebrating the start of the Easter weekend. Did you visit the shops on Western Boulevard or had you been in any of the nearby bars?

If you were in the vicinity of Watkin Road, Western Boulevard and Upperton Road and you do remember anything out of the ordinary, please get in touch."

Since the attack high-visibility patrols in the area have been stepped up and local officers are working to reassure people who live in the area. People, particularly the elderly and vulnerable are also being advised about the benefits of personal attack alarms. Anyone with concerns about being a victim of crime is encouraged to contact their local policing unit for crime prevention guidance

Anyone with any information about the assault is asked to contact DS 1863 Glen Iceton from City Serious Crime Team on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for an officer and when prompted key in his identification number 1863. Alternatively, people can call Crimestoppers free* and anonymously on 0800 555 111.
