Police are appealing for witnesses after a wheelie bin was set alight outside a house on Pevensey Road in Loughborough.

The incident happened at about 3.47am on Tuesday AprilĀ 21, 2009 when the occupants of the address were awoken by their smoke alarm and discovered the fire.

The cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious.

The fire service attended the scene and extinguished the fire. Nobody was injured and there was no damage to the inside of the property.

There were several other small fires on Pevensey Road, Durham Road, Derby Road and Barsby Drive in the early hours of Tuesday morning when wheelie bins, dustbins and hedges were set alight.

All of these fires were extinguished and nobody was injured. Police are also treating the cause of these fires as suspicious.

PC James Berridge, who is investigating this incident, said: "Thankfully the occupants of the house became aware of the fire and were able to leave their house and call the fire service. Otherwise, this incident could have been much more serious.

"I would appeal to anybody who saw or heard anything suspicious in Pevensey Road and the nearby areas in the early hours of Tuesday morning to contact police. If you have any information about these incidents then please get in touch."

Anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area at the time is asked to contact PC 1853 James Berridge on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 1853.
