Man jailed for four burglaries in Highfields and Evington
Quincy Maynard
A Leicester man has started a three and a half year prison sentence after pleading guilty to four burglaries in the Highfields and Evington area of the city.
Thirty-three-year-old Quincy Valentino Maynard was sentenced at Leicester Crown Court on Friday April 17, 2009 for the burglaries which were committed between June and September last year at homes in St Philip's Road, Mayflower Road, Osmaston Road and Highfield Street.
Maynard entered the four homes overnight while the occupants were asleep and stole items including a television, handbags, house keys and car keys. Following two of the burglaries he also stole the victim's car. In each case Maynard entered the homes through insecure windows.
Sergeant Sanjay Chauhan from Spinney Hill Park police station said: "This sentence demonstrates that the police and the courts treat burglaries very seriously and deal with those who commit this crime accordingly. I hope it serves as a deterrent to others out there who are thinking of committing crimes such as these.
"I know that this sentence cannot make up for the distress caused to the victims of these burglaries. However I hope is brings some relief to the victims involved knowing that the person responsible is behind bars."
One of Maynard's victims who lives in St Philip's Road was asleep upstairs with her four children when he burgled her home during the night. She said: "I couldn't believe it when I came downstairs in the morning to find that we had been burgled. The burglar had also left the front door wide open when he left - anything could have happened to us.
"It took me a few days to recover from the shock of it. What was most upsetting was that somebody had broken into my house while my family was home.
"Obviously this man had been committing other burglaries in the area and I am really pleased that the police caught him and he has been given this prison sentence."
Sergeant Chauhan added: "In each of these burglaries entry was gained through an insecure window. I would like to take this opportunity to remind residents of the importance of always securing windows and doors every time you leave your home or go to bed at night. By taking a few simple steps, such as fitting window locks, you can significantly reduce your risk of becoming a victim of this opportunist crime."
