Officers are appealing for information following an attempted distraction burglary at a block of flats on Fosse Road South.

The incident happened between 11.15am and 11.30am on Friday April 24, 2009 when the victim, a man in his forties, was approached by two men at Ashleigh Court on Fosse Road South.

The men claimed from a maintenance company and were there to carry out some repairs. The victim let them into his home and they said that they needed £1,200 in cash to hire a machine to carry out this work and asked the victim for this money.

The victim asked the men to return later on in the day when he would have the money available and they left in a white van. However after making enquiries with the company which provides maintenance to the building, the callers were found not to be genuine.

The first man is described as white, in his fifties, of a large build and around 6ft tall. He had short grey hair and was wearing a short blue anorak and a zip-up top. He also spoke with an Irish accent.

The second man is described as white, in his late twenties to early thirties, around 5'10" tall and of medium to stocky build. He had short brown hair and a very short beard. He was wearing jeans and possibly a short blue jacket. He also spoke with an Irish accent.

PC Ben Dunkley, who is investigating this incident, said: "Fortunately the victim checked out the story these men used before handing over any money.

"We would like to remind anyone that you not have to let someone into your home who you do not know. Anyone from a legitimate company will have identification with them and will not mind you checking with the company that they are a genuine employee.

"If you are in doubt, do not be afraid to refuse to allow them in and call the police on 999 if you think they are suspicious.

"If anyone has any information regarding these suspects or perhaps was visited by someone using a similar story, we would urge you to get in touch."

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC 2123 Ben Dunkley on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for an officer and when prompted key in the identification number 2123. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.

*Please note, some mobile phone providers may charge for this call.
