police, constabulary, leicestershire police Students offered advice as part of Operation Quayside

Personal safety advice is being offered to female students at De Montfort University following a series of assaults on women in the area.

Officers will be knocking on doors in the University's halls of residence over the next three days to chat with female students, offer personal safety advice and to hand out free personal attack alarms.

The aim is to raise awareness and also reassure students after a number of incidents in the Westcotes and Clarendon Parks areas of Leicester where a man comes up behind women and grabs them on the chest or bottom area. The incident is normally over very quickly as the man runs off when the women scream or struggle.

The victims are all white women aged between 18 and 25. All of the assaults have happened at the weekend with most occurring between 3am and 7am.

PC Gail Warden, neighbourhood officer for De Montfort University, said: "There is nothing to suggest that students are being specifically targeted in these attacks. However they are obviously in the same age range as the victims and therefore we feel it is important to make them aware of the incidents and some simple personal safety measures which they can take.

"These include not walking alone at night, sticking to busy routes and carrying a personal attack alarm.

"We do not want to scare anyone, but it is important that we do all we can to prevent further incidents and to catch the man responsible.

"I would also like to reassure female students that local officers have increased patrols in the areas where these offences have occurred and any reports of similar incidents will be given a priority response to maximise our chances of catching the offender."

PC Warden is also sending an email to female students at the University to ensure those living in nearby rented accommodation also receive the advice.

As part of the investigation, homes in the area have been leafleted and posters placed in relevant local businesses as some of the victims were making their way to and from work when the incident happened.

The suspect is described as white, aged 30 to 40 years old, 5'6" to 5'7" tall and of stocky build. He wears a beanie hat and does not talk to the women during the assault.

Anyone with any information about these crimes, who feels they may know the offender or thinks they have been a victim, is asked to contact DC 4587 Sophie McMahon from the City Serious Crime Team on (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for an officer and when prompted key in the identification number 4587. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.
