Officers are appealing for witnesses after a cat was shot with an air weapon.

The incident happened when Smokey, a white and grey cat, was let out by their owner at around 3pm on Thursday May 7, 2009 from its address on Queens Road in Rutland.

When the cat returned at around 5pm the same day, the owner noticed it seemed in pain and when taking it to the vets the next morning, an x-ray revealed it has been shot with an air weapon and a pellet was removed.

PC Pete Starbuck, from Melton local policing unit said: "Smokey’s owner is obviously feeling devastated that someone has very cruelly shot her cat.

"We are appealing for the public's help to catch those responsible and if anyone witnessed this incident or saw anyone carrying an air weapon in the area we need to hear from them.

"Even small details could help us so please get in touch if you saw or heard anything in the Queens Road area between these times."

RSPCA can also be contacted to pass on information through their Cruelty Line on 0300 1234 999.

Anyone with any information should contact PC 842 Pete Starbuck on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions and when prompted, key in the identification number 0842 and leave a message for the officer.
