Vehicle crime prevention campaign launched in Leicester

Crime prevention leaflets are being handed to motorists
Visitors to Leicester are being reminded ‘While you are out shopping, so it the car thief!’
A vehicle crime awareness campaign has been launched by the Safer Leicester Partnership, supported by Leicestershire Constabulary, to urge motorists to take some simple crime prevention measures to reduce the risk of their vehicle being targeted by thieves.
Over the next three weeks, Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) will be patrolling car parks in the city to deter thieves whilst at the same time speaking with motorists as they park their vehicles.
They will also be handing out leaflets which remind motorists to remove all items from view in their car, remove sat navs and wipe any suction marks off the windscreen and always make sure all windows and doors are secure every time they leave their vehicle.
Ruth Coventry, Community Safety Development Officer for the Safer Leicester Partnership, who is co-ordinating the campaign said: “We have identified times of the year and areas of the city where vehicle crime is most prevalent. We are using this analysis to target crime prevention awareness initiatives over the next 12 months.
“This is the first part of that campaign with further activity planned in August to September and over the Christmas and New Year period.”
PC Alan Cook, Crime Reduction Officer for the City Area of Leicestershire Constabulary, added: “Vehicle crime is usually opportunist. A thief spots an item in a parked car and takes the chance.
“No one wants to have their shopping trip or their visit to Leicester spoiled by their car being broken into. We are simply asking motorists to take just a couple of minutes before they leave their vehicle to remove all items on show, especially sat navs and to wipe away any telltale marks from the windscreen which the sat nav cradle has left behind.
“These few simple measures can significantly reduce the risk of you becoming a victim of vehicle crime.”
For more information about crime prevention measures call Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 222 2222 and ask to speak to your local Crime Reduction Officer.
