Crime prevention booklets are being handed out to cyclists in the city centre

Police in Leicester are offering free bicycle postcoding in an attempt to reduce cycle thefts in the city centre.

Neighbourhood officers will launch the cycle crime prevention campaign on Tuesday June 2 in Town Hall Square as part of a community consultation event which is being held between 10am and 4pm.

They will be joined at the event by staff from the City Council Cycle Training Team, who will be able to offer advice on cycle safety, training courses and cycle initiatives in the city, and the team from Bikes 4 All who will be able to offer guidance on cycle maintenance and security and provide free bicycle postcoding to anyone who brings their bike along.

Paul Forrester-Brown from Leicestershire Police Authority will also be available on the day to answer any questions from members of the public.

Sergeant Adrian Underwood from the City Centre neighbourhood policing team said: “We encourage people to come into town on their bikes as most of the city centre is a cycle friendly zone. It is therefore important that we do all we can to reduce the risk of cycles being stolen.

“We have produced some handy credit-card size booklets containing crime prevention advice which we will be handing out to cyclists. These have been funded through the City Centre Joint Action Group which is made up of police, local agencies, retailers and residents.

“Bikes 4 All will also be postcoding cycles for free. This will ensure there is a greater chance of returning the cycle to its owner in the unfortunate event that it is stolen and later recovered by the police.

“We encourage everyone to come along to Town Hall Square on Tuesday to meet the City Centre neighbourhood policing team and to get their cycle postcoded. However, we have agreed with Bikes 4 All that the cycle postcoding will be an ongoing service so any cyclists who can’t attend on Tuesday can still take their bike to the Bike Park at the Town Hall or the Bikes 4 All shop in Queen Street at a later date to get it coded for free.”

A total of 85 bicycles have been reported stolen across the City Centre local policing unit over the last 90 days. To reduce the risk of you falling victim to a bike thief, Leicestershire Constabulary has the following advice:

• Store your bicycle in a secure garage or shed

• Always secure your cycle to an immovable object

• Use an appropriate cycle lock, such as a D-Lock

• Always lock your cycle up when leaving it unattended

• It is a good idea to take any removable parts (e.g. saddle, wheels) with you when you leave your cycle

• Get your cycle security marked to engraved
