Shakespeare’s Richard III will be given a 21st century spin as local students perform its most famous scenes in the historic backdrop of Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre and Country Park on Friday, 12th June 2009.
Students from Ivanhoe College, Ashby School and Castle Rock High School will be performing their own take on key scenes from the play as part of Leicester Shire’s Find Your Talent initiative.
They will be supported by The Shakespeare Schools Festival (SSF) and Slung Low, who have been working with the students over the past few months to help collate their ideas and create a unique and jaw dropping production.
The performance will be split into three ten-minute scenes, each of which will take place at a destination within the grounds of Bosworth Battlefield. The audience will be transported from one scene to the next by costumed guides.
Head of Environment and Heritage Services, Heather Broughton, said: “We are delighted to be working with local schools as part of the Find Your Talent initiative to provide students with the opportunity to learn new skills and try their hand at theatre production.
“The students have had total creative control over their performances, so it will be really interesting to see how they interpret these famous scenes!”
Slung Low, which won The Oxford Samuel Beckett Theatre Trust Award 2008, specialise in moving theatre and hope their unique and innovative approach to theatre production will inspire the youngsters involved.
Artistic Director of Slung Low, Alan Lane, said: “It's such an exciting project to be working on.
“It’s the first time some of these young people will have worked on Shakespeare, the first time making installations and probably the first time performing outdoors. It's so engaging for us to be on such fresh ground.”
Artistic producer of SSF, Dominic Fitch, said: “This collaboration between the students, Bosworth Battlefield and Slung Low Productions is quite wonderful.
“We have taken Richard III out of the classroom, collided it with the most up to date technology and set it in the place Shakespeare actually wrote about.”
There will be an afternoon performance at 4.30pm and evening performance at 6.30pm. Tickets are free, however places are limited, so please book on 01455 290 429. All performances are outdoor, so suitable clothing and footwear is advised, along with an umbrella just in case.
Bosworth’s award-winning exhibition will be open until 6pm offering the chance to re-live the drama and excitement of battle and gain further insight into the character of Richard III and the events of 22nd August 1485.
The Tithe Barn Restaurant will be serving refreshments until 6.30pm and the Gift Shop will be open until 7.30pm.

Bosworth Battlefield
Background: Bosworth Battlefield is run by Leicestershire County Council and is the location of the Battle of Bosworth. The battle, which took place on 22 August 1485, brought an end to 30 years of English civil war, now known as the War of the Roses and saw King Richard III lose both his life and crown to Henry Tudor. The Battlefield includes an award-winning exhibition telling the story of the Battle and looking at its impact on British history, which has been funded by an award from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Find Your Talent
Leicestershire County and Leicester City Council’s have been chosen to run one of 10 pathfinder projects as part of a national £25million Government programme called 'Find Your Talent'. The aim is to engage Leicester Shire’s 250,000 children and young people (aged 0-19years) as consumers, critics, commissioners and creators of arts, creativity and culture.
Find Your Talent is being offered in and out of school and offers opportunities in music, art, film, theatre, dance, digital media, libraries, museums and heritage and much more. Find Your Talent is for every child and young person, whatever their age and whatever their ability.

The Shakespeare Schools Festival (SSF)
Background: The Shakespeare Schools Festival (SSF), now in its ninth year, enables young people to perform abridged Shakespeare plays in professional theatres. This October 65 theatres (including theatres at Melton-Mowbray, Birmingham, Mansfield and Lincoln) will host 10,000 young people from 500 schools performing half-hour versions of Shakespeare’s plays.
Patrons of SSF are Kevin Spacey, Dame Judi Dench, Kwame Kwei-Armah, Sir Tom Stoppard, Sir Arnold Wesker, Nicholas Hytner, Phillip Pullman, Jamila Gavin and Cherie Booth QC.
The Board of Trustees includes Sir Malcolm Field, Dame Jenny Abramsky, Andrew Jackson, Pauline Tambling and chair, Rupert Pennant-Rea.
Workshops for teacher directors are provided by partners, the National Theatre, and for the young casts by partners, The National Youth Theatre
The festival is sponsored by Telereal Trillium and the Transformation Trust.
The Shakespeare Schools Festival introduces young people to the excitement and discipline of live theatre. Through workshops and performance it enables them to appreciate the genius of Shakespeare, to aim high, and to take pride in their achievements.
