Former nurse sentenced following sexual assault on patient

Jonathan Haldane
A former nurse has today (Friday 5 June) been sentenced to a total of 24 months imprisonment after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a patient in his care.
Jonathan Haldane (39) formerly of St James Road, Highfields, pleaded guilty to Sexual Touching and Witness Intimidation at a hearing in April.
At Leicester Crown Court Court this morning he was sentenced to 18 months for the Sexual Touching offence and six months for the witness intimidation to run consecutively. He will also be on the sex offenders register for 10 years and has been issued with a Sex Offenders Prevention Order to take affect on release and to run indefinitely.
The charges related to an incident at Leicester Royal Infirmary in March 2006 when Haldane filmed himself touching the 32-year-old victim inappropriately on the chest area. He later then shared this with an associate through an online chat service who reported the crime to the police.
Leicestershire Constabulary were then faced with a difficult investigation. They not only had to identify the offender, they also had to identify the victim, who would not have known that she had been assaulted.
Speaking following sentencing Detective Inspector Andy Allden said: "By working closely with the hospital we were able to identify the victim and the offender.
"We know it was very difficult for the victim to come to terms with the fact she had been assaulted and yet has no recollection of the offence. We are glad that Haldane pleaded guilty as it means she will be spared the ordeal of having to hear about the incident again in court. We hope today's sentence offers her some closure and enables her to move on with her life.
"As a nurse, Haldane had a duty of care to his patients. He was in a position of trust and he abused that trust.
"Haldane has done a huge disservice to the thousands of honourable, dedicated men and women working in nursing and midwifery who, like everyone else, are shocked and disgusted by his actions."
