Police in Leicester are helping a local charity to get back on track after it was targeted by thieves.

Neighbourhood officers from Hinckley Road police station have organised the donation of 20 mini motos and motorbikes to Nacro, the crime reduction charity, to help it continue its work tackling anti-social behaviour and engaging with young people.

It comes just a month after thieves broke into the charity’s base in Slater Street and escaped with 25 mini motos. The thefts were a huge blow to Nacro which runs the MiniMoto Academy in Leicester – a project which provides local youngsters with a safe and supervised place to ride mini motos and to learn mechanics and road safety skills.

The bikes being donated have all been confiscated by police for being ridden illegally on public roads or land, for example with no insurance, MOT or licence. They are being donated by Unity Recovery in Edgehill Road in Leicester, a company which Leicestershire Constabulary uses to store and dispose of seized vehicles.

PCSO Maggie Hill said: “The MiniMoto Academy is a fantastic local project which has benefited over 100 local youngsters since its launch in July last year.

“It helps to tackle anti-social behaviour relating to the use mini motos by providing a supervised and safe environment for young people to ride bikes, rather than roads, pathways or parks. It’s also educational with sessions which teach riding skills and basic mechanics.

“We were really saddened when we heard that it had been targeted by thieves and wanted to do something to help it continue its good work. We contacted Unity and we are delighted that they are able to donate 20 bikes ranging from 50 to 100 cc to the charity.”

Jonathan Rogers, director of Unity Recovery, said: “We are pleased that these bikes can be put to good use rather than being destroyed, which is usual practice. We wish the charity continued success in its work with young people.”

Jo Adams, anti-social behaviour community development co-ordinator for Nacro, said: “Since the theft of the Academy’s mini motos the police and community have rallied around to ensure we can get our much needed service up and running again. Also I would like to give a special mention to AXLR8, a local motor project who kindly donated £300 to replace two mini motos.

“This is a wonderful example of the community coming together to ensure young people continue to learn about road safety.”

Police are re-appealing for anyone who has information about the thefts of 25 mini motos from the Nacro premises on Slater Street between Friday May 8 and Monday May 11 to contact Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 222 2222 or Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.
