10 July 2009 Daisy's delight at theatre review award

An eight-year-old schoolgirl has won a national theatre reviewing competition after seeing a play through Leicestershire’s Find Your Talent scheme.

Guardian theatre critic Lyn Gardner chose Daisy Taylor’s review of The Snow Queen as the winner of the seven-nine-year-olds’ category of the Young Critics Competition.

Daisy wrote a review after seeing Italian theatre company Teatro Kismet’s production of The Snow Queen with her school, Newcroft Primary, Shepshed.

The visit was supported by Go and See, part of Leicestershire’s Find Your Talent scheme, which encourages children and young people to take part in high quality arts and culture every week.

Daisy’s review said the play was “exciting and adventurous” and she enjoyed the acrobatics and tap dancing.

She won £100 in theatre tokens, a Snow Queen notebook, a poster and a signed programme.

Daisy said: “I was really surprised to have won and I am looking forward to going to see something new at the theatre soon."

Ernie White, Leicestershire County Council’s Cabinet member for better places, said: “I’m delighted for Daisy and look forward to seeing if she becomes a famous theatre critic in the future.

“This is another example of how Find Your Talent is giving young people great opportunities to get involved in the arts and culture.”

For further details or interviews with Daisy, please contact the press office on 0116 305 7046 or Jenna Hall at Find Your Talent on 0116 305 5205.

Background:

Leicester and Leicestershire have been chosen to run one of 10 pathfinder projects as part of a national £25million Government programme called 'Find Your Talent'. The aim is to involve Leicester and Leicestershire’s 250,000 children and young people in high quality arts and cultural activities each week - from film-making to museums. This will be achieved by recruiting a team of Young Ambassadors who will work to devise and deliver cultural activities across the City and the County.

Led by Leicestershire County Council, Leicester City Council and The Mighty Creatives, it is the largest of the 10 national schemes and the only one in the East Midlands. In the first instance, Find Your Talent is due to run in this area until March 2011.

Find Your Talent gives children and young people the chance to try out different cultural and creative activities. It's about helping them to discover new things, to express themselves, to develop a passion and to make the most of their talent. Whether it is music, art, film, theatre, dance, digital media, exploring libraries, museums or heritage, Find Your Talent is for every child and young person, whatever their age and whatever their ability.

It aims to reach up to 250,000 young people in the area, including 100,000 people from hard-to-reach groups.

Find Your Talent is funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Department for Children, Schools and Families, Arts Council England and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council. Visit the Find Your Talent national website: www.findyourtalent.org
