Leicestershire Constabulary is welcoming thousands of athletes, coaches and spectators to the Special Olympics GB National Summer Games which take place at various venues across Leicester from 25th until 31st July 2009.

Inspector Bill Knopp of the City Area Community Safety Bureau offered the following safety advice. He said:

I am sure all the thousands of competitors, their supporters and visitors to the games will have a brilliant time. So lets make this Special Olympics one we can all remember for the right reasons.

To help make your stay in Leicester as safe as possible, here are a few simple things that you can do.

  • If you arrive by car, don't leave anything on display in your vehicle including sat navs, car stereos, CDs or mobile phones. Don't put items in your glove box or the boot, this is the first place a thief will look. Take everything with you or leave it at home.
  • Keep your belongings with you at all times and keep a careful eye on them. Keep bags closed and your money and other valuables such as jewellery, MP3 players and even their headphones out of sight.
  • Be careful when using your mobile phone in a public place, especially in a crowd. Chatting on a phone can make you unaware of your surroundings and can make it difficult for you to hear what is happening around you. Dont leave your phone unattended and make sure you keep it hidden when you're out and about.
  • Avoid walking alone at night and stick to well-lit, public areas rather than dark alleyways. Steer clear of taking shortcuts and always stay in a small group of friends.
  • Arrange a set meeting place in case you lose family or friends. If you are waiting for a bus or train try to wait in a busy area.

You can contact Leicestershire Constabulary in a number of ways.

  • In an emergency - for example when life is in danger or a crime is being committed - dial 999.
  • In a non emergency - for example not requiring police attendance - or to report a non-urgent crime, dial 0116 222 2222.
  • People who cannot use a voice telephone can contact Leicestershire Constabulary by using a text message service on 07624 818 901.
