The original 1948 Special Olympics Torch, Flame of Hope will be escorted on the final leg of its journey to the opening ceremony on Saturday July 25, by police officers and staff,Special Olympics athletes and representatives from event sponsors National Grid.

Representatives from police forces across Great Britain have covered over 800 miles as part of 2009 Law Enforcement Torch Run. Since its lighting in Much Wenlock on July 12, whereLeicestershires Deputy Chief Constable Chris Eyre joined other special guests, the torch has passed through 45 towns and cities.

On Saturday at 9am it will begin the final leg of its journey from Hinckley to the City Centre and on to the Walkers Stadium duringthe ceremony which takes place from6.30pm.

Escorted by police runners from Leicestershire andNorfolk police, the torch will travel via Leicestershire Police Headquarters and Leicesters Bede Park, to the Town Hall Square. There at 1.30pmit will be officially welcomed by Lord Mayor Councillor Roger Blackmore, Acting Assistant Chief Constable Tim Madgwick (North Yorkshire Police), Chief Superintendent Chris Garnhamand Special Olympics Leicester Chairman Ted Cassidy.

Following the civic reception the Flame of Hope will make its way to Walkers Stadium to prepare for the official lighting ceremony for the start of the 2009 Special Olympics GB National Summer Games.

There, Special Olympics athlete, David Ludlow, will light the cauldron and launch the Special Olympics GB 2009 Summer Games accompanied by Leicestershires Assistant Chief Constable, Mr Gordon Fraser.

Mr Fraser said:We are delighted to support the Special Olympics 2009 and honoured to take part in 2009 Law Enforcement Torch Run.

I wish all the athletes taking part every success and hope everyone will enjoy the activities and support the athletes throughout the event. I also hope that the many Leicestershire Constabulary staff who have volunteered their help this week have a great Olympics.

Traffic restrictions will be in place in the area of Walkers Stadium including Raw Dykes Road, Burnmoor Street, and Walnut Street which prohibit vehicles entering the roads from 6pm.

Anyone caught up in any traffic hold-up is asked to be patient as it is hoped to keep any inconvenience to a minimum.
