Buses carry vehicle crime message in Leicester
Acampaign warning motorists of the dangers of car crimehas been launched in Leicester.
The joint campaign by Leicestershire Constabulary and the Safer Leicester Partnership highlights the risks of leaving valuables on display in unattended cars.
Buses and other forms of advertising across the city will display the campaign message reminding motorists that opportunist thieves may have an eye on their car, using the slogan: While you are out shopping, so is the car thief! Remove all valuables from your car every time you leave it.
The adverts remind motorists of the importance of not leaving valuables or sat navson show, as well as closing and locking all doors and windows when cars are left unattended.
The campaign is part of a whole range of crime-reduction measures taking place in the city throughout the year.
Leicester City Councils cabinet member for health and community, Councillor Mohammed Dawood, said: More than half of all car crime is opportunistic, and most vehicle crime is preventable, so we are urging motorists to take extra care not to leave anything on display, as well as ensuring their cars are safe and secure.
PC Alan Cook, crime reduction officer for the City Area of Leicestershire Constabulary, added: Nobody wants to have their shopping trip or visit to Leicester spoiled by having their car broken into. We are urging motorists to take just a couple of minutes before they leave their vehicle to remove all items on show, especially sat nav systems and any telltale marks left by the sat nav cradle.
These few simple measures can significantly reduce the risk of someone becoming a victim of vehicle crime.
The campaign is also reminding drivers to remove all car stereos, mobile phones, handbag, laptops and even clothes from unattended cars, as well as ensuring ignition keys are removed and all doors and windows locked whenever a car is left empty, even if for only a few moments.
Head of community safety at Leicester City Council, Daxa Pancholi, added: We fully support any scheme which helps protect motorists in the city from the scourge of car crime.
We would advise all drivers to heed the advice the police to help safeguard their vehicles.
