A new campaign to tackle rural and equine crime has been launched in Rutland.

New equine security booklets and posters have been circulated to shops, stables and liveries across the county to remind horse owners to think carefully about the security of their horses, tack and stables.

The aim of the campaign is to reduce the risk of equestrian related crime by making people aware of the security measures they can take to protect their property. Equestrian equipment can be very expensive, the average cost of a saddle is 1000, and can be considerably more if it is handmade or made to measure. Few people think to mark their saddle, or other equipment, which makes identifying the owners of stolen saddles almost impossible if they are recovered. As well as the financial implications of having equestrian equipment stolen there is the inconvenience of losing the saddle that fits a particular horse or the trailer needed to transport horses to shows.

The campaign has been organised by Karen Thompson, the Community Initiatives Co-ordinator at Rutland local policing unit; As a horse owner myself, I can appreciate the distress that people experience if their horse is stolen from its field or their riding equipment is taken and I would urge fellow equestrians to look closely at their security and postcode all of their equipment which, in the first instance will make their property undesirable to steal, and secondly make it easier to identify if it is stolen and subsequently recovered.

Very often tack rooms and other outbuildings have poor security yet they often contain expensive items. The booklets and posters are designed to prompt people to think about crime prevention. Most of the advice can be implemented easily, and often cheaply, and will help deter would-be tack thieves.

Crime prevention advice in the booklet includes;

Horse security, thieves are put off if the animal is easily identifiable. Consider;

  • Freeze marking
  • Microchipping
  • Hoof Branding
  • Good photographs

Tack security

  • Keep your tack securely locked away
  • Mark it with your postcode, by freeze marking, stamping or engraving
  • Use a saddle lock

Stable security

  • Install security lights
  • Use good quality locks
  • Check the overall construction of the building are there any weak spots?
  • Does you tack room door have strong hinges
  • Lock all access gates at night

From July 2008 to July 2009 theft of equine equipment across the entire Force area added up to 26,000 (these figures do not include farm equipment). Saddles have been the most expensive items stolen along with rugs and bridles. One saddle stolen was valued at over 1000 and another property lost rugs to the value of 900. In August 2008 a farm lost plant and tack in a burglary which included ten saddles and nine bridles and various other items of tack totalling 13,400.

Karen Thompson continued; Not everyone owns the top of the range equipment but when you add up what you need to look after a horse properly such as saddles, bridles, rugs, harnesses, breast plates, riding boots, hats and so on, it can really add up. If it is stolen you have to cope with the cost and inconvenience of having to replace equipmentwhich fitted a particular horse so I hope that the posters and booklets will offer useful advice to people who own horses and prompt them to consider and review their security.

Anyone who would like a copy of the poster, or a supply of leaflets, can contact Karen Thompson, Community Initiatives Coordinator at Rutland Local Policing Unit on Leicester (0116) 222 2222 ext 4760.
