Police are appealing for witnesses following a distraction burglary in Melton Mowbray.

The incident happened at around 2pm on Tuesday September 15, in the Mill Street area of Melton, when the victim, a man in his nineties, was approached by a man at his home.

The victim let the man into his home where he claimed to be fixing his neighbours roof. He told the victim that his roof was in need of repairs and it was at risk of collapsing.

The man tried to intimidate the victim into giving him money by telling him that he would need to go into a care home if the roof collapsed.

The man then demanded that the victim go to the bank to get him some cash for the repairs and when he refused he asked the victim to give him a cheque.

During this time a second man had let himself into the property and was talking to someone on his mobile phone about arranging to send the man to a care home.

At this point the victim signed a blank cheque, but did not hand it over to the men.

Both men left in a hurry a short while later without making any plans to repair the roof. They drove off towards Mill Street in a small red van.

When the men had gone the victim found that the cheque he had written had been taken.

The incident lasted about an hour.

The first man is described as white, aged about 30 to 35-years-old, around 58 tall, of a slim build and had short brown hair. He was wearing a white t-shirt that has black writing on.

The second man who entered the property a little later is described as white, aged between 25 and 35-years-old, around 59 to 510 tall, of a slim build and dark hair. He was wearing dark clothes and dark woollen gloves. He was wearing a Bluetooth headset.

Both men spoke with an irish accent.

Detective Constable Emmy Thresh, the officer investigating the incident, said: Thankfully the victim managed to cancel the cheque before the men took any money from his account, but he was left upset and shaken after the men had entered his home and intimidated him.

We believe that the vehicle the men used to leave the scene had been parked in the area for some time before the incident and we would like anyone who saw the men or where they had been to contact us.

You may have also been approached by these men or perhaps you recognise them from the descriptions, any information you have could help with our investigation so we would like you to call us.

Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact DC 4142 Emmy Thresh on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 4142. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.

* Please note, some mobile phone service providers may charge for this call.
