Police are appealing for witnesses to a distraction burglary in Whitwick.

The incident happened between 4.10pm and 4.25pm on Monday, September 14 in Brooks Lane.

The 77-year-old victim answered her door to a man who said he was there to look at the trees in her garden.

While he was distracting her another man entered the property. The suspects then left in the direction of North Street.

A short while later the victim discovered cash had been taken from her handbag.

The first suspect is described as white, in his late twenties and around 54 to 56 tall. He was of slim build with short dark brown hair and was wearing a dark, possibly black, jacket down to his hips and dark trousers.

The second suspect is also described as white, in his late 20s and around 54 to 56 tall. He had short brown hair and was wearing a white long sleeved t-shirt with light blue horizontal stripes and dark trousers.

Both men spoke with local accents.

PC Mike Hodgson, who is appealing for witnesses to the incident said: This incident has left the elderly victim shaken. It is possible that the suspects knocked on other peoples doors prior to this incident and its these people we would like to appeal to.

If you saw them in the Brooks Lane area of Whitwick or they knocked on your door please get in touch.

We would like to take this chance to remind people that a genuine caller will not mind rearranging to come back at a time when you are not on your own. If you do answer the door to a stranger always put the chain on first and if you are in any doubt contact the police."

Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact PC 1782 Mike Hodgson on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 1782. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.
