Police are appealing for witnesses following a distraction burglary at a house on Anstey Lane in Leicester.

The incident happened at about 12pm on Wednesday September 16, 2009 when the victim, a woman in her 80s, answered the door to a man saying that her neighbour had agreed for work to be done on their joint chimney.

He asked if he could see the back of the house. After entering the property the suspect looked around and requested a 50 deposit for the work.

The victim walked into another room to get the money. She gave the man a quantity of cash and he left the property. After hed left, the victim realised a further quantity of cash had been stolen.

The man is described as white, in his mid to late 40's, 5 10 to 6ft tall and well built. He is described as having a local accent, wearing a smart suit and carrying a clip board or notepad.

A man matching this description and using a similar story also visited an address in nearby Blackbird Road at about 2.30pm on Wednesday September 9, 2009. He requested access to the back of the house, but the owner of the property asked him to use the side gate. The man looked around the back of the property for five minutes before leaving. Nothing was stolen.

It is believed the same man may have visited other properties in the area using a similar story.

Detective Inspector Simon Preston, who is investigating the incident, said: I would like to speak to anyone who remembers seeing a man matching this description acting suspiciously in the area. Im also keen to speak to anybody who had a visit from someone using a similar story.

I would warn people to be aware when answering the door to a man using this story. Distraction burglars, or bogus callers, will try to mislead you or distract your attention to get into your home and steal your money or valuables.

You should try to use a door chain or spy hole to help check who the caller is before opening. They should also be able to produce an official identity card which you can verify with the company they say they are from.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact DI 631 Simon Preston on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 0631. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.
