Police in Leicestershire have opened a new eBay online auction account to reclaim the value held in goods recovered from law breakers. The public can now purchase items that have formed part of a Court Confiscation Order under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) 2002, from what is the first auction site of its kind in the UK.

In the past year, civil and criminal investigations have yielded hundreds of items worth over 3m, which were confiscated by Leicestershire police and courts under POCA. The new auction site seeks to recoup the value of the items returning the funds to central Government, whilst retaining a percentage towards the running of Leicestershire Constabulary.

Dharmendra Bhakta Acting Detective Inspector of the Leicestershire Constabulary Economic Crime Unit (ECU) said: POCA empowers law enforcement agencies to seize property from alleged offenders. Those convicted and adjudged to have purchased goods with Dirty Money, are required to forfeit their ill gotten gains. Our intervention creates an opportunity for the public to bid to purchase high value goods at competitive prices, with profits going towards new crime fighting initiatives.

The Leicestershire Constabulary ECU works to systematically dismantle organised crime groups across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. To date Police have recovered a stable of vehicles including a 1964 Aston Martin DB4 Superleggera, BMW X5, BMW M3 SMG and numerous high priced luxury items such as 50 plasma screen TVs, Louis Vuitton designer hand bags and high powered motorbikes.

David Hargrave Proceeds of Crime Property Realisation Officer said: The public can buy with confidence. All items offered for sale on this site are legitimate pre-purchased goods only the method of purchase was corrupt. No stolen or found property will knowingly be offered for sale on this site. The proceeds will go back into the public purse to benefit the community and fund future prosecutions.

Currently for sale on the site are home cinema sets, computer consoles and games, and LCD TVs. For more information visit eBay and search for the seller name leicesterhire_police or visit the Leicester Police POCA Property eBay shop. The account is being run on a six month trial basis.

If you have any information relating to someone who may be living a lavish lifestyle funded by the proceeds of crime, contact Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 222 2222 or call Crimestoppers, which is free and anonymous, on 0800 555 111*
