Melvin Berridge

A 60-year-old man has today been sentenced to four years imprisonment after pleading guilty to the indecent assault of two young boys.

Melvin Berridge of Rosehill Street in Derby was sentenced this morning (Friday September 25, 2009) at Leicester Crown Court.

He was also given a Sexual Offence Prevention Order which states he is not to visit the home or live with a child under 16 without informing their parents of his conviction for sexual offences against children, and he must not work with any child under the age of 16 or work in any place where a child under the age of 16 regularly visits.

Berridge had pleaded guilty to the sexual assaults at a previous court appearance on Friday August 7, 2009.

The offences date back to the early 1980s when Berridge regularly indecently assaulted two boys aged 9 and 7-years-old over a one-year period.

The victims reported these incidents to police in January 2008 and following extensive investigations, Berridge was arrested in April that year.

Detective Constable Andy Spence, who was part of the investigation team, said: These two men have shown tremendous courage, in coming forward to report these crimes and helping secure a conviction.

There is a possibility that over the years Berridge has committed crimes against other children who are now adults. Any other potential victims may now feel the time is right to speak to the police.

As this case demonstrates, it doesnt matter how long ago an offence occurred we can still prosecute those involved and its with this in mind that the victims have supported the release of Berridges photograph.

We know it can be very difficult to revisit something like this, particularly if it happened a long time ago. However, I would like to reassure anyone who is a victim of child abuse historically or presently that we promise to handle your investigation professionally and sensitively.

These two victims will hopefully now have some closure from this result and wed like to help other people achieve this. If you recognise this man and want to speak to us then please get in touch.
