Advice ahead of Diwali celebrations in Leicester
PCSO Vinod Modi distributes Diwali 'crime prevention' greetings cards in Belgrave
With just days to go until the Diwali lights switch-on in Leicester, police are offering advice to residents to ensure their celebrations are remembered for all the right reasons.
Police Community Support Officers in Belgrave are hand delivering hundreds of Diwali greetings cards to homes in the area. The cards, from Leicestershire Constabulary, contain details of simple measures which residents can take to secure their homes and belongings.
Up to 40,000 people are expected to attend the lights switch-on in Belgrave Road this Sunday (October 4). A similar number are also expected to turn out on Diwali Day (Saturday October 17) for celebrations which include a fireworks display.
Inspector Steve Riley from Keyham Lane local policing unit, which covers Belgrave, said: Leicester is very proud of its Diwali celebrations which are the largest outside India. We want to ensure that this special time isnt spoiled by opportunist thieves.
Many people will be out and about visiting friends and family during October. We are simply reminding them to make sure all windows and doors are locked and to keep their bags and wallets secure when they go out.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy Diwali.
Leicestershire Constabulary is offering the following advice:
- If you are going out, make sure all windows and doors are locked and that all jewellery, credit cards or cash are kept out of sight.
- Consider postcoding all your valuable electrical items such as televisions, DVDs and computers and photographing items of jewellery or ornaments.
- Leaving a radio on, drawing the curtains and switching on some lights will make it look as though someone is in. This will act as a deterrent to opportunist thieves.
- People visiting the events should also make sure their personal possessions are safe. Bags should be carried close and zipped closed and expensive jewellery should be covered up.
For more crime prevention advice visit www.leics.police.uk or call Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 222 2222 and ask to speak to your local crime prevention officer.
