Cabinet considers primary school’s future

29 September 2009Cabinet considers primary schools future

The future of a primary school will be considered by the County Councils ruling Cabinet on October 6.

Cabinet members will decide whether to launch consultation on the future of Holmfield Primary School, Leicester Forest East, after an OFSTED report raised serious concerns.

Ivan Ould, Cabinet lead member for children and young people, said: We must help Holmfields pupils to obtain the best possible education, seeing that OFSTED continues to have concerns about the schools performance.

In June 2008, OFSTED inspected the school and served it with a notice to improve.

Following extensive support from the County Council, OFSTED noted that the school was making satisfactory progress by January this year but, following another inspection, in June, OFSTED placed the school in special measures.

This means that the school is currently failing to give pupils a satisfactory education. Under the Education Act 2005, the Council has a statutory duty to prepare an action plan and consider the options, including the scope for closure or federation.

If the Cabinet agrees to a 12 week consultation process, parents, teachers and other stakeholders will be asked to comment on five options:

Allowing the school to remain as it is

Amalgamating it with another primary, to create a new, split-site school

Federating it with another local school, which would mean both would be run by one headteacher and governing body

Closing the school and opening a new school on the same site

Closing the school

Holmfield currently has 152 pupils, of which around 39 come from Leicester. It has 114 surplus places. If necessary, the existing pupils could be accommodated within nearby schools, which are all performing better than Holmfield.

If the consultation is launched, the results would be considered by the Cabinet by March next year.
