2 October 2009Save energy at Leicestershire events

A number of exciting and informative events are being held across Leicestershire where people can learn more about saving energy.

Interactive fun days are being held in Ullesthorpe and Kegworth in support of this years Big Switch Off which will run from October 12-18.

During Big Switch Off week people are being urged to make an extra effort to save energy by taking measures such as switching off un-used chargers and turning off standby buttons on computers and TVs.

Kegworth Environment Group will be holding its first ever free environment event between 10am and 3pm on Saturday, October 3 at the Best Western Yew Lodge Hotel, Packington Hill, Kegworth.

Activities to be held on the day include an economic driving simulator - on which you can test drive your fuel consumption - demonstrations and interactive stalls, childrens activities and games, advice on money saving, grants and energy saving and free refreshments.

Ullesthorpe Environmental Group will be presenting its event: Save Money...Go Green at Ullesthorpe Village Hall, Main Street, on Saturday, October 10th from 10am to 3pm. The group has arranged for numerous attractions to attend including farm shops promoting local produce and Lutterworth Freecycle.

Both the Kegworth and Ullesthorpe events will have plenty of freebies with the chance of entering a raffle and winning a top prize.

Free goodies and energy saving advice will also be available at the East Midlands Food and Drink Festival, which is being held on Saturday and Sunday this weekend at Brooksby Hall, at the Big Switch Off stall.

A spokesman for the Rural Community Council, which is helping to organise the events, said: There are so many simple things we can all do to save energy.

Lots of information will be available at these events about how to go green and save some money at the same time.

At all the events people can find out more about the Big Switch Off and how to sign up to take part.

Prof Mike Preston, Chairman of ENABLE (Environmental Action for a Better Leicestershire) which has helped organised the Big Switch Off, said:

I hope people take a minute or two to sign up to the online pledge and get involved with the campaign.

During the week Central Networks will monitor the amount of energy used in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to see how much has been saved.

The Big Switch off is a partnership lead by ENABLE and local authorities across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, together with the Rural Community Council, Groundwork Leicester and Leicestershire and Central Networks.
