police, constabulary, leicestershire policeAppeal following incident on Queens Road

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was racially abused on Queens Road in Leicester.

The incident happened at about 8.55am on Wednesday October 28, 2009 when the victim, a 47-year-old man, was driving along Queens Road in the direction of the city.

He was driving a silver Mercedes and had stopped at traffic lights at the junction with Clarendon Park Road, when a man on a bicycle stopped alongside the car and started banging on the passenger side window.

The victim continued driving along Queens Road until he stopped in traffic near to Victoria Park Road. The cyclist again stopped alongside him and again knocked on the window.

The driver opened the passenger side window and the cyclist shouted racial abuse at him, leaning through the car and attempting to punch him before taking a bag from inside the car and putting it on the pavement.

The suspect then cycled off in the direction of Victoria Park.

He is described as white, about 46 to 48-years-old, about 6ft tall with short hair. He was wearing a dark suit and trousers. His bike is described as old with a bag over the right side of the back wheel.

PC Emma Jayne, who is investigating the incident, said: This happened on a busy road during the morning rush hour. There would have been several other motorists on Queens Road at this time as well as people walking by who may have witnessed this incident.

Do you remember seeing a cyclist matching this description on Queens Road? Did you see the silver Mercedes or witness any of the altercation? If so, then please contact me.

Anybody with any information is asked to contact PC 4350 Emma Jayne on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 4350. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.
