Neighbourhood beat officers are teaming up with conservation volunteers in Melton Mowbray to help tidy up Melton Country Park to mark Not in My Neighbourhood week.

Police Community Support Officers from Melton Town North will be rolling up their sleeves and putting on their gardening gloves on Wednesday 4th November 2009. They will be helping members of the Melton Conservation Volunteers clear undergrowth and thin bushes and trees to keep tracks and pathways clear so that people can use the park without feeling intimidated or unsafe.

Not in My Neighbourhood Week, which runs from Monday 2nd November 2009 to Friday 6th November 2009, aims to promote what is being done locally to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour and encourages the police, public services and communities to work together to keep communities safe.

Catherine Tregaskes, a Conservation Officer with Groundwork Leicester and Leicestershire and Coordinator of the Melton Conservation Volunteers said; We were thrilled when the police said they would like to join us for the afternoon. We get a lot of feedback from members of the public who tell us how much they appreciate the work we do in the park keeping tracks clear and bushes trimmed. They tell us they feel safer in the park because they can see ahead of them and the paths arent blocked by over hanging trees. It also discourages young people from meeting because we are opening areas up and keeping them clear.

The environmental charity works with volunteers in the park every Wednesday as part of an ongoing programme of conservation focussed activities.

Eliza Chanin, Community Initiatives Coordinator for Melton Local Policing Unit, said; We do get reports of anti-social behaviour and underage drinking in and around the park and in fact it is one of the neighbourhood beat priorities so we thought it was a great way of helping to make the park a safer and nicer place for walkers and families to enjoy. We wanted to get involved this week as part of Not in My Neighbourhood week which is designed to show people the work that is being done but lots of different agencies to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour. It promises to be a lot of fun too.
