Distraction burglaries in Melton and Thurmaston
Police are appealing for witnesses following a number of distraction burglaries in the Melton and Thurmaston area over the weekend.
The first incident happened at around 3pm on Saturday November 7, in the East Avenue area of Melton.
The victim, a man in his nineties, was approached by a man at his home who claimed his ball had gone into the victims back garden.
Once in the house the suspect let in a second man who asked to use the victims toilet.
Shortly after this the two men left the house.
Following the incident the victim found that a tan coloured wallet and a dark blue cash tin, both containing money, had been taken.
The first suspect is described as white, aged around 25-years-old, of medium build and between 55 and 56 tall. He had dark hair, a round face and was clean shaven.
The second suspect is also described as white, aged around 25-years-old, of medium build and was clean shaven.
The second incident happened between 1.30pm and 2pm on Sunday November 8, in Alexandra street, Thurmaston.
The victim and her husband, both in their eighties, were approached at their home by a man who was asking about the weeds in their garden.
Again a second man came to the house and asked to use the toilet. Both men then left the house together, shortly after.
Sometime later the victim realised that money had been taken from an upstairs room.
The first suspect is described as white, around 20-years-old, about 56 tall of a slim build with short dark hair, combed forward. He was wearing a black jacket and leather trousers.
The second man is also described as white, aged about 20-years-old, of medium build and with short hair, combed forward. He was also wearing a black jacket and trousers.
The final two incidents also happened on Sunday. In both cases the victims refused the callers entry to their homes, in Brookfield Street and Springfield Street, Melton.
Detective Constable Emmy Thresh, one of the officers investigating the incidents, said: In both burglaries the victims were left very upset that their money had been taken.
We have so far completed house to house enquiries and have delivered leaflets regarding the burglaries to the people in the Melton area, but we are still appealing for more people to come forward with information.
We are keen to speak to anyone who thinks they may have seen a man matching either of the descriptions in the area. We would also like to speak to anyone who thinks that they have also been approached by the men.
At the moment we are not linking these incidents but this is something we are keeping an open mind about.
I would also like to take this opportunity to make people aware when answering their doors to people they do not know. Fortunately, in two of the incidents over the weekend the suspects failed to gain entry to the victims homes and we are hoping that this will highlight to people how important it is to stay alert.
