Detectives have launched a murder investigation following an incident in Barwell.

Officers were called at around 9am this morning (Thursday November 12, 2009) following a report of a serious assault on Moat Way in Barwell.

On attendance, officers discovered that a 37-year-old woman had been seriously injured. She was treated at the scene by paramedics but died a short time later at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

The victims name is not being released at this time as she has not yet been formally identified. A post mortem examination is due to take place this evening to establish the cause of death.

The area remains cordoned off to allow for a full forensic examination of the scene and officers are conducting searches in the immediate vicinity and surrounding area.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Harrison, who is leading the enquiry, said: Our investigation is in its very early stages and we are currently trying to establish exactly what has happened. It appears that the victim was attacked in her car just shortly after she had arrived at her workplace.

We are speaking with people who were in the area at the time to piece together the circumstances that led to the incident and would urge anyone who has information or recalls seeing anything suspicious to please contact the police immediately.

Anyone with information can call Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 222 2222 or Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.
