A PCSO has been praised today after his actions helped to secure the prosecution of four men for GBH, kidnap, false imprisonment, robbery and blackmail.

At around 8.40am on Saturday April 18, 2009 PCSO Ben Broad spotted a Toyota Carina on Greenacre Drive with steamed up windows. When he approached the vehicle he heard cries for help coming from the boot of the car. At the same time a member of the public was also on the phone to the police with suspicions about the vehicle.

The car contained the four defendants - Safraz Mirza (25) and Zain Gaffar (17) both of Berners Street, Leicester, Faizel Khan (19) of Taurus Close, Leicester, and Tahir Desai (21) of Garendon Street, Leicester - who tried to flee the scene but PCSO Broad was able to detain one of them until police officer colleagues arrived. This was Khan.

Later that day Safraz Mira was also arrested with Gaffar and Desai in custody the following day.

Today at Nottingham Crown Court, after being convicted at a previous

hearing, Faizel Khan was issued with an indeterminate sentence for public protection (IPP) and will have to serve 11 years before he will be considered for release. Safraz Mirza received 11 years with Zain Gaffar sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. Faizel Khan got seven years and five months.

Detective Inspector Simon Cure from the Operation Spartan team said: This is a brilliant result and sends a very strong message about how seriously the courts take these kinds of crime.

Theres no doubt that the actions of PCSO Broad helped to save the victim from any more distress at the hands of these men.

Police Community Support Officers are a valuable part of the policing family and his actions demonstrate how PCSOs directly impact not just on community reassurance but the prevention and detection of crime.

The victim in question, a 34-year-old Leicester man - who knew his attackers - was repeatedly punched in the face by them while he was the in boot of the car. He sustained a broken nose, perforated ear drum, swollen cheekbone, marks on his wrists where they were tied, a deep cut to the inside of his lip and bruising on left side of his face and head.

Their aim was to try and get the victims family to hand over money for his return.

PCSO Broad actions were backed up by some excellent work by Detective Constable Louise Rooke and other officers from City CID.

Louise supported the victim throughout the investigation and the attention to detail she and the other officers demonstrated helped to piece together the events of that night, and the complicated circumstances leading up to the assault.

The background to this incident, as is often the case, was drugs. Thats how these men knew one another and drugs and drugs debts are often the motivators for these kinds of crimes.

I hope todays sentences send two very strong messages, one about the dangers of getting involved in drugs-related criminality, that you open yourself up to this kind of treatment by mixing in those circles.

But also, very importantly, if this is route you decide to take, you can be assured that we at Leicestershire Constabulary, together with the Courts and CPS, will do everything in our power to tackle the drug-related crime and bring you to justice.
