19 November 2009Pick up festive food tips whilst Christmas shopping

Planning meals and making the most of leftovers are just a few things that can help cut waste and save money this Christmas.

Over the next month, Leicestershire Waste Partnership will be at Christmas markets and craft fairs across the county to give shoppers practical giveaways and handy advice.

As well as reducing their food waste, people could save around 50 a month.

The roadshow, part of the 'Dreaming of a Green Christmas' campaign, also offers people the chance to learn more about a selection of recipe ideas designed to make the most of yuletide leftovers.

Top tips to help save money this festive season include:

Many foods fresh foods can be frozen such as - vegetables, meat, fish, milk, whipped cream, bread, cakes and hard cheeses

Consider use by dates when in the supermarket to ensure food lasts over the Christmas break

Many traditional Christmas food items can be prepared ahead and frozen in tubs ready for the big day.

No matter how many people are being cooked for this Christmas, the portion calculator at www.lovefoodhatewaste.com/perfect_portions removes the guesswork and tots up the right amount.

This weekend, the partnership will be at Leicester City Food Festival (22nd November) and Brocks Hill Christmas Craft Fair (21st November).

Michael Rook, Chairman of Leicestershire Waste Partnership, said: We want everyone to have an enjoyable Christmas this year and have created recipes which enable people to produce a nice spread for friends and family yet also stick to a budget."

Notes

This promotion is part of Leicestershire Waste Partnerships campaign to help prevent waste and raise awareness of recycling services over the festive season.

Campaigns being run by the District and Borough Councils and County Council are all using the Dreaming of a green Christmas theme.

The Leicestershire Waste Partnership is made up of the seven districts of Blaby, Charnwood, Harborough, Hinckley and Bosworth, Melton, North West Leicestershire, Oadby and Wigston, together with the County Council.

The Partnership has a clear vision for sustainable waste management.

It aims to reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfill by preventing waste in the first place, encouraging reuse, recycling and composting, and treating whats leftover before disposal.

Working together, the partners aim to recycle or compost 58% of rubbish by 2017.
