Officers from Keyham Lane local policing unit are appealing for witnesses following reports of two distraction burglaries in Leicester.

The first incident happened at about 5.30pm on Tuesday October 27, at a house in Watson Road.

The victim, a woman in her eighties, answered her door to a man who claimed he was there to check the water pressure.

The man took the victim into her kitchen and asked her to turn on the taps while he checked the pressure under the sink.

Shortly after a friend of the victim shouted into the house and at this point the man left.

The neighbour then told the victim that she had seen a second man come down her stairs and leave the house before getting into a silver, Vauxhall Astra with the first man.

Its not believed that anything was taken during the incident.

The first man is described as white, aged between 28 and 32-years-old, between 56 and 57 tall. He was of stocky build and had short, dark brown hair with bald patches around the side. He was wearing a dark, crew neck jumper, dark navy jeans and spoke with a Leicester accent.

A similar incident happened in Belgrave Avenue just over a week later at about 2.45pm on Wednesday, November 4.

The victim, a woman in her nineties, answered her door to man who again claimed that he needed to check the water pressure in her home.

Just like the previous victim she let the man in and he made her turn on the taps while he checked the pressure under the sink.

After about ten minutes he left the house telling the victim he had another job to go to.

The man is described as white, with a pale complexion and had very short, dark hair. He was also wearing a navy jacket and navy gloves.

The next day the victim found that her gold ring with an amber stone and platinum ring with an imitation diamond had both been stolen.

PC Lisa Green, the officer investigating the incidents, said: The two accounts are very similar and we believe that they are linked.

We would like anyone across Leicester who knows anything about the burglaries, or believes they have also been approached by a man matching the descriptions, to call us.

If you recognise the man described or think you know who is responsible then please call us and help us with our investigation.

I would like to take this opportunity to ask people to always be wary when a stranger calls at their door.

If you do not know the caller then always ask for ID and ask them to call back at a time that suits you, when you will have someone with you. Any legitimate caller will have no problem with returning to your house when someone else is present.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC 4520 Lisa Green on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 4520. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.

* Please note, some mobile phone service providers may charge for this call.
