Saajidah Mullan

A 20-year-old Leicester woman has today (Thursday November 26, 2009)been found guiltyof three counts of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (section 18) after three women were stabbed in Leicester city centre.

Saajidah Mullan, of Ellesmere Place, Braunstone, was found guilty at Leicester Crown Court today to all three charges after a 10-daytrial. The offences relate to an assault which took place just before midnight on Friday August 29, 2008 in Belvoir Street, Leicester.

One woman aged 40 and two aged 20, received puncture wounds to the body.

Four other women were arrested in connection with the assault but were released with further action taken against them.

Sentencing will take place later next month.

Following the incident Saajidah left the country and detectives from Leicestershire Constabulary launched a media campaign for information as to her whereabouts.

She was arrested at Heathrow airport in April 2009 after intelligence was received that she was returning to the country.

Detective Inspector Andy Allden who investigated the incident said: This was a very nasty assault and could have had much more serious consequences.

Instead of facing the consequences of her actions Mullan decided to leave the country. However, as this case demonstrates, regardless of how much you think you can outmaneuver the police, we will do everything in our power to bring you to justice.

This woman committed a very serious offence and she can expect to serve a number of years in prison. She was carrying a knife on an evening out in Leicester and chose to use it to harm these women. Thankfully incidents like this are still something of a rarity in Leicester and wed like to keep it that way.

"There is never a good reason to carry a knife. If you are found carrying a knife there are consequences and if you injure someone with a knife you can expect us serve a considerable sentence as this case so clearly demonstrates.

Inspector Allden also paid tribute to those people who came forward with information about the assault.

He said: We asked for a lot of public assistance with this case, both to identify the women involved and then to locate Saajidah Mullan. Id like to thank everyone who came forward with information. Even small details can be a vital part of the jigsaw so Id like to thank all the members of the public who responded to our appeal.
