Town Crier fights crime in the City Centre
Town Crier fights crime with Inspector Jason Ross
Oyez! Oyez! Oyez! Leicesters town crier is helping to keep city centre shoppers safe in the run up to Christmas.
The town crier - dressed in his traditional bright blue suit, frilly shirt and white tights was crying out crime prevention advice to shoppers in Market Street today (Thursday November 26).
The main focus of his message relates to purse thefts which traditionally rise at this time of year when the number of visitors to the city centre increases.
Inspector Jason Ross, commander of the City Centre local policing unit, said: Everyone is so busy at this time of year rushing between shops, so it is very difficult to get crime prevention messages across.
The town crier assisted us with a similar campaign last year and proved to be popular with shoppers. When the town crier speaks, people really do stop and listen. We will be using his services throughout December to reach as many people as possible with simple crime prevention messages.
We simply want to ensure that people visiting Leicester over the coming weeks have an enjoyable and crime-free time.
The town crier was accompanied by Police Community Support Officers handing out purse bells and chains to shoppers to enable them to attach their purses to their handbags. The bells and chains have been funded by the Leicester Joint Action Group which is made up of representatives from the police, partner agencies, retailers and the community.
A lady who was given a purse bell by one of the PCSOs commented: I think its a good idea. When you read about a person in the paper who has had their purse stolen you really feel for them. Its such a shock for them. The purse bells are really useful and I will definitely use mine.
Leicestershire Constabulary has the following advice for shoppers:
- Never leave a handbag or purse unattended and be aware of your surroundings.
- Keep your handbag firmly zipped shut or closed and on your person at all times.
- Wear shoulder bags with the opening against your body.
- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
- Only keep items in your bag that are needed.
- Keep your cash card separate from your cheque book.
Purse chains and bells are available from the Front Enquiry Office of Mansfield House police station off Belgrave Gate in Leicester.
