A new Youth Club in Loughborough is to benefit from money seized from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA).

The police in Loughborough have donated 250 to the Youth Club, which is being run by volunteers from Thorpe Acre Church, to enable staff to buy equipment and craft materials for the youngsters.

Under the Proceeds of Crime Act, criminals can have their illegal earnings and possessions, such as money, houses and cars, taken away even if they are not convicted of the crimes they have committed. It was set up in 2002 to act as a deterrent by stripping criminals of their assets.

The club has been set up for youngsters between the ages of 7 and 11 who live on the Thorpe Acre Estate after parents raised concerns that there is very little for children to do in the area. The club opened on Wednesday November 19th 2009 at 4.30pm and, without any external advertising, 18 children came through the door.

Reverend Keith Elliot, the Vicar of Thorpe Acre Church, said; We were thrilled to see so many youngsters on our first day and we expect the numbers to double in future weeks. A lot of local parents have been telling us that there is very little for children of that age group to do in the area so, with support from church funds and the donation from the police, we have been able to set up a club especially for them.

The children can come along and take part in craft activities and we have computers, games, soft ball tennis and all sorts of other things. The children were obviously enjoying themselves and we expect to be even busier in future weeks. The money from the police has gone towards the set up materials and that has been gratefully received. There is a small tuck shop too selling sweets and drinks.

The Police Community Support Officer for the neighbourhood, Daniel Thorpe, said; It is really pleasing that we were able to give proceeds of crime money to the youth club because it is great to see the money being used in such a positive way. There arent many facilities for young people in this area so it is nice to see a place where youngsters can go and getting involved in some fun positive activities. I will popping along from time to time to say hello and get to know people.

The Youth Club is open to everyone from the Thorpe Acre Estate. It is held in the Church Centre on Thorpe Acre Road every Wednesday between 4.30pm and 6pm.

If you suspectsomeone is living off the proceeds of crimeyou can call the Crimestoppers charity on0800 555 111 or call Leicester (0116) 222 2222 and report it to the police.
