Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman was subjected to racist abuse in Leicester.

The incident happened at about 11.20pm on Thursday November 12, when the 44-year-old victim was driving along Filbert Street in her black Alpha Romeo.

There were a number of cars parked along either side of the road and so there was only room for one car to drive along it. As the victim drove along the road she was met by another car, a taxi, coming from the opposite direction.

As neither car could pass a passenger from the taxi left the vehicle, as did the victim, and the man began to racially abuse her. Analtercation thenfollowed.

During the altercation the man spat at the woman and then about six other people, both men and women, got out of the taxi and began to verbally abuse her.

Both the victim and the group got back into the cars a short while later and the taxi then reversed, giving way to the victim.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and released on police bail pending further enquiries.

PC Richard Wightmam, the officer investigating the incident, said: We believe that this incident was racially motivated because of the comments made to the victim, who was white.

During the incident there were a number of people in the area that the victim spoke to before leaving Filbert Street. We would like to appeal to these people to come forward.

We also believe that a number of people were shouting at the woman from student accommodation in Filbert Street. We would like to appeal to anyone who lives in the halls, or the area, who witnessed the incident to contact us.

Anybody with any information is asked to contact PC 714 Richard Wightman on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 0714. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.
