Detectives investigate Whitwick and Ashby distraction burglaries
Detectives are appealing for information following two distraction burglaries in Whitwick and Ashby.
The first incident happened between 5.30pm and 6pm on Wednesday December 9, 2009 at a property on Hall Lane in Whitwick when the occupant saw a man outside and invited him in after he explained that there had been an explosion in the street.
He asked the woman to check her taps in the kitchen whilst he would check the rest of the house. He left around 30 minutes later and she discovered a search had been made of the property and a quantity of money had been taken.
The man is described as white, in his late twenties, around 5ft 8 tall and of slim build. He had short dark hair and was wearing a smart looking workman outfit and carrying a clip board.
The second incident happened at around 9.30pm later the same night at a property on Smedley Close in Ashby when the elderly resident was asleep and was woken by a knock at the front door.
He answered the door and was met by a man claiming he was from the water board and had come to check the water with some special dye.
He let the man in and they went into the kitchen to check water. The victim suddenly noticed another man poking his head around the kitchen door.
He challenged both men asking to see their ID and when they said that they did not have any, the victim threatened to call the police. The men ran off empty handed.
Police are keeping anopen mind as to whether these two incidents are linked.
Detective Constable Sukhvinder Obhi, who is investigating these incidents, said: "Distraction burglaries are particularly distressing and many victims are left very shaken by the incident. We want to make sure elderly and vulnerable residents protect themselves against this type of crime. These criminals target our most vulnerable because they are trusting. Don't be trusting, be suspicious.
If anybody comes to your door claiming to be from the water board or any other utility company be very suspicious. The water board does not exist. Our advice is don't let them into your home, turn them away and contact the Police immediately by dialling 999.
If they do provide identification take a number and shut the door on them while you make your checks. Any genuine caller will be happy for you to do this.
