Police Appeal to Weekend Clubbers

Police Appeal to Weekend Clubbers
The Fired and Broke Drink Driving Campaign was launched on December 1, 2009 to reach the 18-25 age groups who statistically are more likely to drink and drive. The campaign states that not only is drinking and driving fatal, but it can serious ruin your livelihood, making it difficult to keep or get a job. This was illustrated by 18-year-old Myles who found himself unable to pursue his dream of becoming a police officer when he was convicted in June 2009 for drink driving.
This weekend, police appeal to clubbers to think before they act. So far, the majority of drink drive arrests have taken place in the Leicester city area, where revellers come to enjoy a night out in the city pubs and clubs. Half (50 per cent) of all drink drivers arrested the city areas have been aged 18 to 25, and three quarters (75 per cent) of the total number have been aged 18 to 35.
Chief Superintendent Geoff Feavyour said: These figures indicate that the message is still not registering with a hardcore of drivers who still feel it is OK to make the dangerous decision to drink and drive.
Police have stepped up their operations against drug driving and are now able to conduct twice as many drug driving tests, having doubled the number of trained officers who can complete a field impairment test (FIT) to 56, in November 2009.
Chief Superintendent Geoff Feavyour said: Sadly, the consumption of illegal drugs and the excessive drinking of alcohol is still an aspect of youth culture and the clubbing scene.
Driving whilst on drink or drugsaffects your motor movements and your ability to judge time and distances, all of which inevitably prove fatal when driving a vehicle whilst impaired.
My message to anyone consuming any amount of drugs or drink this weekend is; Please do not get in a car and drive; get a taxi or travel with a designated driver.
These are the six solutions police, as part of the Leicestershire Road Safety Partnership, are advising the public to bring into play this weekend:
1. Have none for the road simply dont drink if you have to drive
2. Leave your car at home and travel with a designated driver
3. Book a taxi before you go out and dont leave it to chance
4. Take the bus to your destination to remove the temptation to drive
5.Give your car keys to a friend for safe keeping, preferably a designated driver, when youre out and youve decided to drink and therefore not to drive
6.Leave your car keys behind the bar if you know the landlord in you local pub, remove your car key from your key ring and ask to leave it behind the bar
