A man has today been sentenced to 18 years imprisonment for conspiracy to import class A drugs.

John Uche Williams (30) of West Green Lane, London was sentenced at Leicester Crown Court earlier today (Friday December 18)after a 2 week long trial.

The investigation started in April this year when a parcel destined for an address in Leicester was intercepted by police and UK Borders Agency officers at East Midlands Airport.

The packages had been sent by courier service from Los Angeles, Brazil and Pakistan.

On examination by customs officers, the packages were found to contain a long heavy metal cylinder which contained cocaine and heroin with a street value of more than 2.5 million.

In May officers from Leicestershire Constabularys specialist crime investigation team arrested Williams and subsequently charged him with Conspiracy to Import Class A Controlled Drugs.

Detective Sergeant Brett Collins, who was part of the investigating team at Leicestershire Constabulary, said: Todays result sends out a strong message to anyone involved in drug dealing or importing drugs. We will not tolerate it and will use all the investigative tools available to us to track down these people and bring them before the courts to face justice.

The fact these drugs were seized has stopped them working their way onto the streets of Leicester. I hope this result reassures the people of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland that we will act to deal with the drugs menace that can blight communities.

This has been a long and complex investigation and todays result is testament to the hardwork which has been put in by officers.

Jim Jarvie, Deputy Director for the UK Border Agency Central Region, said:

This was a first class detection by our officers at East Midlands Airport who x-ray suspicious parcels. Their eagle-eyed actions have prevented a highly sophisticated plot to smuggle a large quantity of cocaine and heroin into the country.

This criminal aimed to make big money through smuggling drugs that bring devastation and destruction to our communities. Working closely with our partners in the police, we will continue to target those criminals who seek to smuggle drugs, weapons and illegal goods into the country.

Since January this year, technology used in UK Border Agency checks at ports across the country has helped in the seizure of illegal drugs worth over 185 million.
