Melton Special Constable is a winner!
A Special Police Constable (SPC) from Melton has won the Leicestershire Special Constabulary Award 2009 (Saville Cup).
SPC 5315 Graham Williams joined the Force in August 2007 and was made an Acting Section Officer (which is equivalent to the role of Sergeant in the regular force) just over a year later in November 2008 becoming permanent in November 2009. He works full time as an electrical shift technician for a large distribution company in Leicester and usually works two full eight hours shifts for the police each week which he fits in around his full time shift pattern.
The purpose of the Saville Cup is to recognise the way in which Special Constables bring their abilities, talents and qualities to the assistance of the regular police and the community. SPC Graham Williams won the award after being nominated by Sergeant Jo Hodson from Melton Local Policing Unit. He will attend an award ceremony in March 2010 and receive 250.
As well as the five Specials at Melton, Graham line manages four others based at Rutland. He has organised the teams to focus on neighbourhood policing, to ensure they are a visible and reassuring present on the streets of Melton and Rutland while supporting regular officers in their drive to tackle anti-social behaviour. He has worked with Sgt. Hodson to set up monthly training sessions for the Specials and set up recruitment seminars in Melton.
Sergeant Hodson said; Graham is a great asset to policing in Melton and Rutland and he and his team add an extra 24 days in officer time each month which is a great contribution. Grahams skills as a supervisor are reflected in the fact that he became a Section Officer only a year after joining the Force and his quiet efficiency as not gone unnoticed because the level of dedication it takes to work full time, manage a team of nine officers and patrol the streets should not be underestimated.
I have little doubt that the Melton Specials team would not function as effectively without Graham as their leader. He has shown a willingness to learn new skills and develop others which in turn assists Melton Local Policing Unit (LPU) and Leicestershire Constabulary. He is a valuable asset to the Force both as an officer as well as an individual, and we are thrilled that he has won the award as it is great that Grahams commitment has been recognised.
Graham said; Being a Special is something I have always wanted to do since my arrival in the UK in 1999. One of the main reasons I moved from South Africa was to escape the crime and violence and now I find myself part of a good team in a great LPU combating crime here. I enjoy the role of Special Constable immensely as no 2 shifts are the same and its a different role from my real Job I was totally surprised when I was told I had won because I didnt even know I had been nominated. I couldnt have achieved this result though without the help and support from all the other Specials at Melton and Rutland and the Regular officers .They are all a great team to work with across all shifts
Superintendent Sally Healy, from the North Area, said; On behalf of the Chief Superintendent, I fully endorse the comments made by Sergeant Hodson and had no trouble recommending Graham for the award. His nomination form was full of examples showing his qualities as a Special Constable and as a manager. His enthusiasm, commitment, communication, organisational and motivational skills are all to be commended, but the most impressive fact is that all of this has been achieved with only two years service in the Special Constabulary.
