Inspector John Gray

A new Inspector is taking over as Commander of Melton Local Policing Unit (LPU).

Inspector John Gray will start on Monday 18th January 2009 and takes over from Inspector Nigel Peters who has been running the station since November 2006. Insp. Peters will take up a role as an Operational Command Inspector managing incidents across the North Area.

Inspector Gray, who is 41 and lives in the Melton area, started his career with Leicestershire Constabulary twenty years ago in April 1990 after doing a degree at Leicester University. He spent the first six years of his career as a Police Constable in the city before transferring to Norfolk Police in 1996 as an Acting Sergeant working in Great Yarmouth.

In September 1998 Inspector Gray returned to Leicestershire Constabulary on promotion to Sergeant and spent two years working in Melton before moving to posts at Rutland and Hamilton and then spent four years as a Detective Sergeant in the Child Abuse Investigation Unit. He worked as a Staff Officer for a year for the current Temporary Chief Constable, Chris Eyre, before becoming an Operational Command Inspector in April 2007 managing incidents across the North Area. He was appointed to the post of Melton Mowbray LPU Commander in January 2010.

Inspector Gray said; Melton Mowbray is one of the favourite places Ive worked and I am really passionate about making a difference in Melton because that is where I live. The town and Borough enjoy low crime rates and has seen some great reductions in crime so I am hoping to build on the good work that is already going on and continue to develop a strong working relationship with our partners.

I grew up in the country side so I have an understanding of some of the challenges facing rural communities as well as those faced by people living in towns. I want to provide an excellent police service for people living in Melton to ensure everyone has a good quality of life and can live safely without fear of being pestered. I am also passionate about young people and helping them realise their potential and I see a lot of opportunities to work closely with churches, young people, the street pastors and ex-offenders who have turned their life around.

Inspector Nigel Peters said; Its been a great experience working at Melton Mowbray Local Policing Unit. Officers and support staff have done everything I have asked of them and I thank them for their support. I cannot conclude without thanking our partnersand the support I have received from them too. Finally I wishJohn the very best for the future."

In his spare time Inspector Gray runs, goes clay pigeon shooting and does youth work with young people at the Baptist Church in Melton. He has three children.

Anyone who would like to get in touch with Inspector Gray can email him through the Leicestershire Constabulary website or call him on Leicester (0116) 222 2222.
