Massive drug dealing operation sees four more convicted

Four more people have been sentenced today as part of a massive crackdown on drug dealing in central Leicester.
Police officers from across Leicester were involved in the operation which, over a six month period saw 82 people charged with 410 drugs offences.
The arrests, which began in May 2009 and continued for six months, were part of a dedicated crime and antisocial behaviour crackdown called Operation Consequence.
So far, 61 people have been sentenced to a total of 172 years imprisonment for supply of Class A, B and C drugs on the streets of Leicester.
Today four more people, all arrested in September last year, were added to that tally after pleading guilty to the offences against them.
Gary Curtis (38) from Evington Street Leicester pleaded guilty to six counts of supplying Class A and one of possession with intent to supply Class A. He was sentenced to three years for each count to run concurrently.
Jamal Adan (22) from Bedford Street North pleaded guilty to eight counts of supply class A, one count of being concerned in the supply of Class A and one of offer to supply Class A. He received two years imprisonment for each to run concurrently while Devery Lewis (18) of Twycross Street received 52 months suspended for two-and-a half years and 200 hours unpaid work for four counts of supplying Class A. The fourth defendant Shital Patel (35) of Frederick Street, Leicester pleaded to one count of supplying class A and was given a 12-month community order.
Inspector Shane ONeill, Commander of Spinney Hill Park local policing unit, said: The people of Leicester spoke and we listened. They told us that they wanted us to deal with street drug dealing and the associated crime and antisocial behaviour that comes with it and that is exactly what we did.
We spent months identifying these individuals, most of whom were working in the Highfields or Spinney Hill areas of Leicester, collecting evidence and then a further six months tracking them down and arresting them.
In total weve seen 64 men and women brought to justice and weve got another 18 still to go before the courts. Residents in the affected areas have told us that theyve seen a noticeable difference, that the crime and anti-social behaviour that surrounded these drug dealers has greatly reduced.
The next step is to keep it that way and this is where we need the publics assistance. Weve done what we can to get rid of the drugs menace, we now need early notification if local people get suspicions that its starting to edge back.

Inspector ONeill added: We really hope that this provides the wider Leicestershire community with a tangible example of how their police force is working to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour.
Operation Consequence is all about showing criminals that there is a consequence to their actions, that we will take action and work hard to put them behind bars.
The operation has required a great deal of effort by both the police officers who put the evidence together to the CPS prosecutors who have helped to secure the convictions. Thousands of hours have been put in by detectives and barristers determined to bring the dealers to justice.
Lawrence English, Senior District Crown Prosecutor from the CPS said:
We have worked very closely with the police from the outset of this operation, providing dedicated lawyers to ensure that the cases were evidentially watertight.
As a result these4 defendants have also pleaded guilty to serious drugs offences, and we are obviously pleased that they have been brought to justice, and made Leicester a safer place to live.
