Car crime initiative launched in Melton Mowbray

Police in Melton are launching a new campaign to tackle vehicle crime.

Officers will be focussing their efforts at known hot spot locations such as beauty spot car parks with both high visibility and plain clothed patrols. A crime prevention campaign is also running alongside the enforcement initiative to encourage motorists to take everything out of their vehicle when they leave them.

Sergeant Lee Morris, from Melton Local Policing Unit, said; Thankfully vehicle crime is quite low in the Melton area but wed like to reduce it further and catch those responsible. Unfortunately on most occasions the owner of the vehicle has left valuable items on display and this has tempted the opportunist thief to break in. It only takes a few seconds to break a window and take an item that has been left on a seat. Only yesterday (Sunday 31st January 2010) we had a car broken into at one of the car parks at Belvoir Castle. The owner had left a lap top, wallet and Sat Nav on display and everything was taken.

I would ask people to help us by not leaving anything on display in their vehicle preferably taking everything with you when you go. This removes temptation and that can make the difference between becoming a victim of crime or not. The items dont even have to be valuable, leaving a jacket or bag on display can tempt someone to see whats in them. It is always worth parking your car in a well lit spot if you can and always always lock the doors.

As part of our campaign we will be using high visibility patrols at key times to act as a deterrent as well as running a plain clothed operation to try and arrest the people committing this crime.

Anyone with any information about people breaking into cars can call the police on Leicester (0116) 222 2222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is free* and anonymous.
