Week long cycle coding event across Rutland
A Police Community Support Officer post codes a bike
Police in Rutland are running a cycle coding week at venues across the county.
Officers will be visiting two locations a day for seven days in order to offer the service to as many people as possible. For a small cost of 2, officers will security code bicycles; offer crime prevention advice and everyone who takes up the service will get a free flashing arm band to keep them safe in the dark.
Officers will be using a Selectamark bike marking product with an individual security code for each bike. The security code can only be seen under ultra violet light. The owner of the bike then registers their details with bikeregister.com and a small sticker is placed on the bike frame warning people that the bike is property marked which acts as a deterrent to would be thieves. If an officer recovers a bike that has been stolen they can contact the company and get the contact details of the bikes rightful owner.
Karen Thompson, the Community Initiatives Co-ordinator at Rutland Local Policing Unit, said; We are aware that lots of people may have had bikes for Christmas so we wanted to get around the county to security code as many bikes as possible. In our experience items that are overtly marked are more likely to be left behind or ignored by the thief.
We will be based in either the beat bus or police car at locations across all four neighbourhoods and hope to see as many people as possible. We will be at Rutland Water over the weekend, which is very popular with cyclists, so we will be able to offer the service to people from outside the county as well.
Besides security coding bikes, officers will be available to give crime prevention advice and well be reminding cyclists that the best way to keep their bike safe is to always lock it to something secure using a good quality lock even if its in their back garden or kept at the side of their house.
For more information please call the Community Initiatives Co-ordinator Karen Thompson on Leicester 0116 222 2222 ext 4760.
