A Special Weekend!

A Special Weekend!
TheNational Specials Weekend (6-7 February) will once again highlight the Special Constabulary volunteers who help to tackle crime in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
Members of the Special Constabulary or 'Specials' as they are often referred to, will join colleagues from the Road Policing Unit, Tactical Support Group, Dogs Section and Firearms Units as part of the activities to support Road Policing theme this year.
Chief Inspector Mark Newcombe said: The Specials have an important role to play in the fight against crime and disorder. Their remarkable endeavour is very effective and of benefit to all.
This operation will give the Specials a chance to enhance their skills in Roads Policing to keep all road users safe from harm.
This weekend the Specials will be carrying out duties to make our roads safer but it is important to remember that they are also out every week of the year performing what is an invaluable form of voluntary service.
They face the same challenges as regular officers and have an equal role to play in improving the quality of life for the people of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
Although volunteers, the Specials have the same full powers, equipment and uniform as their regular paid colleagues and will carry out enforcement work around seat belts, mobile phone use, drink and drug driving and uninsured or untaxed vehicles.
Commandant Paul Smith said: People from all walks of life apply to join the Specials. After your application has been processed and accepted, you will be expected to carry out duties on a voluntary basis consisting of a minimum of four hours a week.
If you interested in joining the Specials well be delighted to hear from you as the work of the Special Constabulary is invaluable.
Leicestershire Constabulary and the communities that we serve gain tremendously from the dedicated and professional volunteers. With professional training in communications, decision making, problem solving, team skills and leadership skills it is a great way to enhance your CV.
Mr Simon Worthington, co-ordinator for the Special Constabulary, said: We have set procedures and systems on training and retention.
We ensure the co-ordinated delivery of this professional and dedicated training for members of the volunteer force to ensure that they are equipped to deal with situations in the same way as police officers.
If you are interested in joining the Special Constabulary, you can contact the Specials Recruitment Team on Leicester (0116) 222 2222 ext 2062.
