Homes of elderly residents in Eyres Monsell are being given a security boost to help prevent distraction burglaries.

Officers from Leicester City Council and Leicestershire Constabulary will be visiting up to 300 properties to carry out security checks and install crime prevention devices such as door chains and bolts, window locks, kick boards to strengthen front and back doors, personal alarms and digital spy cameras, where appropriate.

The project has been funded by a Government grant of 40,000 which was awarded to the Leicestershire Neighbourhood Watch Association as part of their Securing Houses Action Against Burglary initiative.

Marion Lewis, Chair of Neighbourhood and Home Watch Network, said: The government awarded 500,000 to neighbourhood schemes across the country to reduce crime during the economic downturn. We were delighted that our bid was successful so that we can help areas in the city by securing homes most at risk.

Inspector Rich Toone, commander of Welford Road local policing unit, said: Distraction burglars target the most vulnerable members of our community. We are pleased to support this initiative and hope it provides some reassurance and peace of mind to elderly residents in Eyres Monsell.

I hope it also serves as a warning to those that prey on the elderly in this way. The installation of a digital spy hole camera means that we can capture images of any people who call at that home to help identify and track down offenders.

Leicester City Councils cabinet member for Health and Community Safety,

Councillor Dawood said: This is a great opportunity to help vulnerable residents in the city and bring together the community in the area.

In addition to installing crime prevention devices, Leicestershire Neighbourhood Watch Association is distributing distraction burglary calendars which display emergency contact numbers and crime prevention advice to serve as reminders for residents.

Four No Cold Calling zones will also be established in the Eyres Monsell area as part of the project.
